EXPEDITION OVERVIEW
Our 8 Day Tanjung Puting and Yogyakarta Cultural Experience will take you to Yogyakarta; the cultural heart of Java and the Tanjung Puting National Park, in Central Kalimantan.
Yogakarta is a cultural hub know for its unique culture, arts and massive ancient temples. During your time in Yogyakarta you will travel in a private airconditioned car with our expert guide to the major temples of Pramban and Boroduder as well as other important historical sights. You will stay in a modern boutique hotel with amazing views over the city of Yogakarta and you will eat delicious meals in delightful local restaurants.
Tanjung Puting National Park is a unique place in itself. It is not only home to the orangutan, but also the rare proboscis monkey and the false gavial crocodile. During your time in the park, you will be living aboard our river boat known as a klotok. The klotok is well equipped with essesntial amenities. At night you will sleep on deck on comfortable mattresses with mosquito nets. Our crew will cook up delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The klotok comes fully equipped with safety features including life vests and a first aid kit. When you're not walking through the jungle, you can relax on deck watching the wildlife, read a book or laze the day away.
EXPEDITION GOALS
Our goal is to provide our guests with a unique insight into the cultural aspects of Java as well as observing wild and semi-wild orangutans in their natural habitat. We will provide you with a safe platform for you visit historical sights and to observe the wildlife that Borneo has to offer; including proboscis monkeys, gibbons and more.
We will also provide you with comprehensive information about each destination you are in, so that you are fully informed about your surroundings. Our joint effort with The Orangutan Project continues to support conservation programs in both Borneo and Sumatra. Each guest's fare includes the cost of a one year orangutan adoption package.Â
WHAT TO EXPECT
You are embarking on an adventure to places and amongst people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in Indonesia will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the same aspects that make an area exotic and an attractive destination.
While boat expeditions are considered easy, no trek is easy; even those rated "easy or moderate". In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this "pack" a flexible and relaxed attitude. Bring a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humour and a willingness to encounter the unexpected and you will find your trip to Indonesia the adventure of a lifetime!
ITINERARY
Day 1:Arrive in Destination Port; Denpasar, Bali
Upon your arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your overnight accommodation in Bali the Holiday Inn Resort.
Day 2 : Bali to Yogyakarta - Prambanan - Yogyakarta Palace
This morning you will be transferred to the airport to meet your flights to Yogyakarta. On arrival you will start the day with a visit Prambanan Temple; a Hindu complex made up of a series of individual temples set on a huge open plain. Here, you will learn about the history of the temples and the massive rebuilding effort that is currently underway. You will then stop for an early lunch in a nearby restaurant before visiting the Yogyyakarta Palace. At the palace you will learn about the Javanese culture and how it continues to play a large role in the lives of the local people. On your way back to your hotel you will stop for a short visit to the water temple, also known as Taman Sari. You will then be transferred to the Swiss BelBoutique Yogyakarta for your overnight accommodation. (B,L)
Day 3: Mount Merapi Lava Tour City Tour
This morning you will be transferred to the Mount Merapi region about 28 kilometres north of Yogyarkarta to board 4WD vehicles to visit the volcano lava fields. This will be followed by a Yogyakarta city tour where you will see the local craft of batik and silver making. This evening you have free time to spend the evening relaxing by the pool or take a stroll down Jalan Malioboro for some shopping. (B,L)
Optional extra: You have the option of watching the Ramayana Ballet on one of your nights in Yogyakarta. The Hindu love story is performed by hundreds of dancers with the remarkable backdrop of Prambanan in the background.
Day 4: Borobudur - Semarang
This morning you will wake early to transfer to Borobudur to view the magnificent sunset over the biggest Buddhist temple in the world. As the sun rises you will take in the peaceful temple and the beauty of the surrounding hills. After your visit to Borobudur you will visit two other nearby Buddhist temples; Mendut Temple and Pawon. You will have lunch in a local restaurant then transfer by car to Semarang for your overnight accommodation. (B,L)
Day 5: Semarang - Borneo (Pangkalan Bun)
This morning you will be transferred to the airport to meet your direct flight to Pangkalan Bun.On arrival in Pangkalan Bun you will be met by your Orangutan Odysseys guide and taken directly to Kumai harbour to meet your klotok and start you journey into the National Park looking for wildlife along the way. Overnight aboard the klotok (river boat).(B)
Day 6: Pangkalan Bun - Camp Leakey - Crocodile Lake
This morning you will travel up the Sekonyer river to Camp Leakey; the oldest camp set up for the orphaned orangutans. Upon arrival at Camp Leakey you will take a short trek in the surrounding rainforest's and meet some of the resident orangutans and their caretakers, followed by a visit to the museum. You will then head back to the klotok for lunch, where you may see more orangutans. After lunch head back the down river to Pondok Tanggui for orangutan feeding. At the end of the day you will be given a tour of the surrounding forest area, then cruise down Camp Leakey River to your overnight location at Crocodile Lake. Whilst here, you will likely see other wildlife of Borneo such as macaques and proboscis monkeys. Overnight on the klotok. (B,L,D)
Day 7 : Rimba Lodge - Pondok Tanggui - Pesalat Reforestation
Today you will travel up river to Pesalat Plantation where you will plant some trees to help regenerate the forest. After lunch, you will take a tour of the local village, and in the afternoon you will slowly travel down river, stopping along the way to watch the proboscis monkeys on the riverbanks. As dusk falls we will travel back to Kumai harbour and enjoy a dinner along the river as we go. Overnight in Pangkalan Bun at Swiss Belinn hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 8 : Pangkalan Bun - Denpasar (Bali)
This morning you will transfer to the airport for your flight back to Bali. You tour concludes upon your arrival in Denpasar. (B)
