How this helps Orangutans:

You will be supporting the Australian Orangutan Project (AOP) and the Orangutan Care Centre (in Pangkalan Bun) in their work protecting Orangutans and their environment as well as other environmental research. You will also be helping Friends of the National Park in regenerating areas of cleared rainforest.

PROJECT SUPPORTED
By participating in this expedition your school will be helping to raise funds (a target of AUS$5,000 per school) by getting friends, family and colleagues to:

  • adopt orphaned Orangutans
  • sponsor hectares of the Orangutan's natural habitat (via the Safeguard programme).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Visit rainforest in search of the amazing Orangutan.
  • Jungle trek and overnight stay including a jungle night walk.
  • Visit the Pesalat Reforestation Program and understand how deforestation is affecting the area and how reforestation is possible.
  • Visit a local village for overnight stay including meeting people, seeing them at work, visiting their school and town plus being entertained by local musicians and dancers at night.
  • Cruise on your Klotoks (local boats) through rivers and the jungle to see Long Tail Macaque, Proboscis Monkeys, Monitor Lizards, Gibbons, crocodiles and more.
  • Part of your expedition cost is directly donated to help save these wonderful animals. Every students fare includes the cost for One Orangutan Adoption and Sponsoring 100 hectares of rainforest.

OVERVIEW

IMG_1390This expedition has been specifically crafted,  to aid in the development of Secondary & Tertiary Education. The expedition focus on:

  • Developing a greater understanding of the relationship between humanity and nature.
  • Highlighting humanities adverse affect on the planet.
  • Students will take part in community based projects, including replanting native trees in a once pristine environment.
  • Fun, adventure and the journey. Travel to a local village, meet the people, swim under waterfalls, listen to their music and meet the local school children.

National Curriculum Link - At OO we not only want this expedtion to be an adventure of a lifetime, but also a valuable educational experience. Details of how OO's school expeditions integrate with the NC are available on request.

Risk Management Policy -  OO has a set of developed risk management procedures and policies to ensure the safety of all our clients.

Your school group will be escorted by an OO trained guide and facilitator throughout your entire stay. You will be transported in private vehicles between destinations.

ITINERARY

Day 1 : Arrive Bali / Jakarta. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel for overnight accommodation.

Day 2 : Early morning flight to Pangkalan Bun. You will be greeted at the airport by an OO representative and transferred to your accommodation. From here you will taken on a river boat trip to experience the local town and it’s culture. Afterwards we shall take a walk around the town to experience the people and the location. Then back to your overnight accommodation. (B, L, D)

Day 3 : Pangkalan Bun - Camp Leakey – Crocodile Lake. Early start today will have us traveling in our own Klotok boats up the Sekonyer river to Camp Leakey, the oldest camp set up for the orphaned Orangutans. Arrive at Camp Leakey, take a short trek in the surrounding area and meet some of the residents and carers, and then visit the museum. Then back to boat for lunch. We are likely to see Orangutans (or have them see us) near the boat. Then we will be back at the camp for the afternoon feeding time. After enjoying the feeding time of the Orangutans and being given a tour of the surrounding forest area, back to the boat and cruising down the Camp Leakey River to Crocodile Lake where we will spend the night. We most likely will see other wildlife of Borneo such as Gibbons & Proboscis monkey. Overnight on the Klotoks. We provide a mattress, pillow and mosquito net. (B,L,D)

Day 4 : Crocodile Lake – Pondok Tangguy –Trajan Harapan – Rimba Lodge. Leave early morning and back to Pondok Tanguii for morning feeding. Then we cruise back down to check into Rimba Lodge and Tarjan Harapan station for afternoon feeding. Overnight Rimba Lodge. (B,L,D)

Day 5 : Pondok Tanggui – Jungle Trek. Early morning start sees us back up to Tanggui for morning feeding again and then we will begin our jungle trek deep into the Orangutans eco system. This trek is some 16km to 20kms (4-6 hours) and includes an amazing “swamp” area to get through. Lunch will be along the way. This is a privileged trek as very few get permission to camp in the Jungle. Overnight in your jungle camp. Tonight we will take a walk through the jungle to experience the sounds of the Borneo jungle. (B,L,D)

Day 6 : Jungle Camp– Fireflies. Morning sees us proceed to the Pesalat Plantation where we get to learn about reforestation, plant some trees to help regenerate the forest. You will be given GPS coordinates to locate the trees that you planted. Lunch and then we will be back on the boat and depending on time will get a another final Orangutan viewing at Tarjan Harapan station viewing and a tour of the local village. Later that afternoon we will take the boat down the river to a mangrove of Nipah palm area where we will see millions of fire flies. On the way, we will watch proboscis monkey along he river banks. Final night on the Klotoks. (B,L,D)

Day 7 : Pangkalan Bun – Orangutan Orphanage. This morning we will visit the Orangutan Clinic near Pasir Panjang Village. Today you will be taken to Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine for a short visit (approx 2 hours). Here you will get to see the Care Centre’s facilities and be shown a few of their some 600 resident orphaned Orangutans. ** Some conditions apply here including health checks. Note: Your trip includes a donation towards the Care Centre entry fee. After the Care Centre you will be driven to Kubu Village and onto Bogam & Keraya Beach. We will stay overnight there at a local village house. We will be shown around the village including the local school and town hall. Plus the villagers shall show you how they work and play. The villagers will cook for our lunch and dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 8 : Keraya - Pangkalan Bun. This morning we will complete our stay at Keraya and return to Pangkalan Bun for our return flight to Bali / Jakarta. Check into our hotel and free time (B)

Day 9 : Today we are transferred to the airport for our return journey home. (B)
