HIGHLIGHTS
OVERVIEW
Our 7 Day Tanjung Puting Experience will take you
to the Tanjung Puting National Park, which is found in central
Kalimantan. Tanjung Puting National Park is a unique place in itself.
It is not only home to the Orangutan, but also the rare Proboscis
monkey (which we see plenty of) and the false gavial crocodile.
The park is protected by the National Government while the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) and the Friends of the National Park remain very active to protect the Orangutan's environment from illegal loggers.
Your home while in the park for 3 days/ 2 nights will be our river boat or klotok (1 extra night will be at the Rimba Lodge). The klotok is well equipped with a shower and sit down toilet and at night you will sleep on deck on comfortable mattresses including mossie nets. Our captain and crew will cook up delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Klotoks come fully equipped including life vests on board and a first aid kit.
While we are not walking through the Kalimantan jungle or visiting orphanages, we can relax on deck watching the wild life, read a book or just laze the day away.
The Tanjung Puting Experience can be a life altering experience. The sheer size and gentle nature of the Orangutan will leave many with not only fond memories but a real desire to help one of our closest relatives.
ITINERARY
Day 1 : Arrive in Bali. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to our hotel for overnight stay.
Day 2 : Fly to Pangkalan Bun. You can take a late afternoon scenic “river cruise” to see the incredible sights and sounds of the local town and it’s people.
Day 3 : Pangkalan Bun - Camp Leakey –
Crocodile Lake. Early start today will have us traveling in our own
Klotok boats up the Sekonyer river to Camp Leakey, the oldest camp
set up for the orphaned Orangutans. Arrive at Camp Leakey, take a
short trek in the surrounding area and meet some of the residents and
carers, and then visit the museum. Then back to boat for lunch. We
are likely to see Orangutans (or have them see us) near the boat.
Then we will be back at the camp for the afternoon feeding time.
After enjoying the feeding time of the Orangutans and being given a
tour of the surrounding forest area, back to the boat and cruising
down the Camp Leakey River to Crocodile Lake where we will spend the
night. We most likely will see other wildlife of Borneo such as
Gibbons & Proboscis monkey. Overnight on the Klotok. We provide a
mattress, pillow and mosquito net. (B,L,D)
Day 4 : Crocodile Lake – Pondok Tanggui
–Trajan Harapan – Rimba Lodge. Leave early and back to Pondok
Tanggui for morning feeding. Then we cruise back down to check into
Rimba Lodge and Tarjan Harapan station for afternoon feeding. Stay
Rimba Lodge. (B,L,D)
Day 5 : Rimba Lodge - Pondok Tanggui -
Pesalat Reforestation. Morning start sees us back up to Tanguii for
morning feeding again and then we will travel up river to Pesalat
Plantation where we get to plant some trees to help regenerate the
forest. You will be given GPS coordinates to locate the trees that
you planted. From there we will take a tour the local village. Later
that afternoon we will take the boat down the river to a mangrove of
Nipah palm area where we will get to enjoy dinner watching millions
of fireflies. On the way, we will watch proboscis monkey along the
riverbanks. Then we cruise back to Kumai and overnight in Pangkalan
Bun. (B,L,D)
Day 6 : Pangkalan Bun. Today will allow some free time for shopping or a walk
through the streets of Pangkalan Bun to see the Yellow Palace and
local markets before catching your plane back to Bali. (B)
Day 7 : Bali and free to go to next destination. (B)
As we directly manage the operations in Indonesia we are able to arrange expeditions at any time of the year. The best time of year to visit Kalimantan is March to November as these are usually the driest and most settled times of the year.
Note : If you would like to stay at Rimba Lodge rather than our klotok, this can be arranged. Please let us know to discuss the price.
