Palangkaraya School Discovery (10 Days)

How this helps Orangutans:

You will be supporting the Australian Orangutan Project (AOP), OUTROP and CIMTROP (Centre for International Cooperation in Sustainable Management of Tropical Peatland) in their work protecting Orangutans and their environment as well as other environmental research.

PROJECT SUPPORTED
By participating in this expedition your school will be helping to raise funds (a target of AUS$5,000 per school) by getting friends, family and colleagues to:

  • adopt orphaned Orangutans
  • sponsor hectares of the Orangutan's natural habitat (via the Safeguard programme).

 OVERVIEW

This expedition has been specifically crafted,  to aid in the development of  Secondary & Tertiary Education. The expedition will focus on:

  • Developing a greater understanding of the relationship between humanity and nature.
  • Highlighting humanities adverse affect on the planet.
  • Students will take part in community based projects, including replanting native trees in a once pristine environment.
  • Fun, adventure and the journey. Travel to a local villagea, meet the people, swim under waterfall, listen to their music and meet the local school children

Your school group will be escorted by an OO trained guide and facilitator throughout your entire stay. You will be transported in private vehicles between destinations.

 ITINERARY

Day 1 : Depart Country – Arrive in Bali or Jakarta for overnight stay.

Day 2 : Palangkaraya – Sabangau National Park. Pick up from the airport and travel to the OuTrop Research site in the Sabangau National Park by car, canoe and small railway line. Settle into the basic accommodation and join in a short guided walk along the board walks and into the forest. After lunch, visit and work in the plant nursery, re-potting seedlings, and later visit tree plots for measuring the rates of tree growth. Later set up the photo traps for capturing wildlife activities at night. Overnight in camp. (L,D)

Day 3 : Sabangau National Park – Tangkiling. Wake up early to check the camera traps and download the photos to identify the animals caught on them. There are always surprises!

Then divide into groups for following these activities –

  • The early morning gibbon venture, tracking and surveying the gibbon population.
  • Orangutan search and follow, to see wild orangutans in their natural habitat. 
  • Butterfly traps – check the traps and identify any butterflies

After lunch at Camp, we will transfer to Tangkiling and check in to Rungan Sari Resort Hotel. Take some time to relax and enjoy a swim. Later, take a trip by car to the huge granite boulder, Batu Banama, to see a collection Patahu, or spirit houses, and hear the local legends. Then make the climb to the top of Tangkiling Hill to see the sunset and take in views. Barbeque by poolside and the evening is free to rest and be ready for the next day full event. (B,L,D)

Day 4 : Tangkiling – Kanarakan. Early morning walk through forest to Sei Gohong village and board the Rahai’i Pangun. Cruise up the Rungan river to the famous Orangutan Island (from the BBC series Orangutan Diaries). Watch the orangutans in their natural habitat on the islands. The Rahai’i Pangun journeys up river to the tiny village of Kanarakan where there will be a Dayak Welcome ceremony by the village people. Join in dances and learn some Dayak words.

Pair up with a local child as your personal guide/ for the visit. Take a walk through nearby forest and see the rubber trees and how the resin is taken from them.  Carry out a livelihood survey Canoes will cruise through nearby lakes to do some fishing from the banks of the lake (optional. Lunch & Dinner onboard . Overnight on board or in village home-stay. (B,L,D)

Day 5 : Kanarakan. After breakfast, join in the village school class. Children from the visiting school could give a fun presentation of collecting rubbish at the school and after school take part in a village clear up and provide sponsored bins. After lunch together with the local village child partake in fishing and collecting local forest food .

Evening cook together using traditional cooking equipment – share food with village hosts, and exchange experiences over this farewell dinner. Overnight on board. (B,L,D)

Day 6 : Kanarakan – Tangkiling – Nyaru Menteng. The boat makes its way down stream, again passing the orangutan island and making its way to Tangkiling harbour .

Transfer by car to the BOS Orangutan Foundation’s Education Centre in Nyaru Menteng. Accompanied by our experienced guides, observe adolescent orangutan behind glass in the socialization cages and watch a film of BOS projects in Central Kalimantan. Take canoes to Bapallas Island to see the orangutans released by the BOS Foundation.

Transfer by car to Rungan Sari resort , to check in and have a swim. In the afternoon, we make a visit to a rubber factory to learn how the village rubber is purchased, checked for quality and processed. Return to the hotel for a BBQ by the pool. (B,L,D)

Day 7 : Tangkiling – Kasongan– Buntut Bali – Tangkiling. After breakfast transfer by car to the town of Kasongan on the outskirts of the Sebangau National Park. While there, visit the local markets and bonehouses, or ‘sandungs’. Later, from Kasongan port, take an exciting speedboat ride to the village of Buntut Bali to see an Palm Oil plantation and small longhouse, having a picnic lunch on the way.

Return down stream to Kasongan and in the late afternoon , stop at Bukit Batu to see dancing at sunset on the rocks. Overnight Rungan Sari Hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 8 : Tangkiling – Palangkaraya. After breakfast by the pool, pack your bags for the trip to the Museum, where many fascinating artifacts are housed and you can learn more about the Dayak culture. Check in to the Amaris or Luansa hotel in Palangkaraya, and then we go to have lunch at Kampung Lauk, for a meal of the local favourite, grilled fish.

After lunch we make the short trip to the village of Sigi, to see the old sandungs, and make a canoe trip to old Sigi, the old town left isolated by the changing course of the Kahayan River. We return to Palangkaraya to the Hotel. Spend the last night at the Big Roundabout, Bundaran Besar, and have some traditional satays for dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 9 : Palangkaraya – Bali / Jakarta. Depart Bali / Jakarta. Taxi transfer to the airport. Transfer to Hotel for overnight stay.(B)

Day 10 : Bali and free to go to next destination. (B)
