OVERVIEW

ABC_0392Our 11 Day Gunung Leuser Odyssey is the complete adventure package. It will take you to the 1 million hectare Gunung Leuser National Park on the island of Sumatra. Home to 80% of Sumatran Orangutans the Gunung Leuser National Park is also home to an enormous population of other wildlife including the Thomas Leaf Monkey, Pigtail Macaque, Longtail Macaque, Gibbons, Lizards, Turtles, Hornbills and more.

We will journey from the tranquil river community of Tangkahan where we will bathe elephants that are used for local jungle patrols, to the summit of Gunung Sinabung ; a dormant volcano; to the jungles near Katambe in search of wild Elephants. We will also do a spot of whitewater rafting on the Alas River.

Of course we will also be in search of wild Orangutans which are in abundance in this part of the Park.

Your home on this trip will be a mix of both basic guest houses, hotels and tents. You will be escorted from one destination to the next by an experienced OO local guide.

This expedition will help us save the environment of the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan. Illegal Logging and encroachment of large scale mono crops such as Rubber and Palm Plantations, seriously threaten this wonderful habitat. Like all OO trips, your expedition fee will adopt an Orangutan through the Australian Orangutan Project (AOP) and also protect 100 hectares of jungle from illegal logging through the Safe Guard Program.

ITINERARY

Day 1 : Arrive Bali / Jakarta / KL or Singapore. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel for overnight accommodation.

Day 2 Early morning flight to Medan. You will be greeted at the airport by an OO representative and transferred to Tangkahan. Tangkahan is famous for its elephant safaris and wonderful jungle scenery. You will take a small punt across the river and check into the Mega Inn. After lunch we will go for a river walk and then tube down stream to a beautiful waterfall. We will then walk back to the Mega Inn for dinner. (B)

Day 3 : Elephant Trek.  This morning we will head off to a nearby Elephant Rangers Station. There, elephants are used to help Rangers monitor the nearby jungle and also offer elephant treks. After helping the Rangers bathe the elephants we will take a walk with them atop one of the beautiful creatures. The Elephant Trek will terminate at the Mega Inn where we will check out and then drive to Berastagi ; a hill town with a temperate climate and that is powered by thermal power from nearby volcanoes. In Berastagi we will check into our hotel for free time. (B)

Day 4 : Gunung Sinabung - Ketambe. Early in the morning we will head up to the summit of Gunung Sinabung to watch the sun rise over the landscape. From there we will head down to the local market where they sell familiar fruits and vegetables such as apples and lettuce and some unfamiliar fruits such as Dragon Fruit. After checking out we will start the long drive to Ketambe arriving there at approximately 3pm. We will overnight in a local guest house on the banks of the Alas River. (B)

Day 5 : White-water Rafting and Alas River. Today we will whitewater raft the famous and beautiful Alas River. We will drive upstream into the Park to start our journey and then head back via the river, ridding rapids (Class 3 on average) back to the guest house. This afternoon we will also meet our guide who will take us on our 4 day trek into the Gunung Leuser National Park. Overnight in the guest house. (B)

Day 6 : Gunung Leuser National Park. After breakfast we head off into the Park. This amazing ecosystem will provide us with viewings of Orangutans, Thomas Leaf monkeys, Gibbons, Macaques, Hornbills and more. Our destination is a remote lake that is a drinking hole for wild elephants. This however will take a couple of days to get to, so we will camp either in the forest or by a river for the first night. (B,L,D)

Day 7 : Gunung Leuser National Park. We will continue into the jungle getting closer to the elephant watering hole. More viewings of wild Orangutans, hopefully a dominant male will be spotted. Overnight tents. (B,L,D)

Day 8 : Gunung Leuser National Park. Today we will reach the lake where wild elephants frequent. We will need to be quiet and cautious of these magnificent creatures. This is a rare opportunity to see wild Sumatran Elephants. Overnight tent. (B,L,D)

Day 9 : Gunung Leuser - Ketambe. Today we return to "civilization" at Ketambe but not before a wonderful final days trek through the pristine rainforests. Overnight guest house in Ketambe (B,L)

Day 10 : Ketambe - Medan. After a relaxing breakfast we will drive back to Medan. We will check into our hotel and then have free time to ourselves. (B)

Day 11 : Medan & Return Home. For those heading back to their original port we will transfer you to the airport and for those staying on to explore Indonesia further we bid you fair-well. (B)
