Fundraising Trips Information

"$212,000 in 2012"

Tour Promotion & Fundraising Information Sheet

To all Fundraising Expedition members,

Further to finalising this years travel and fundraising plans between Australian Orangutan Project  (AOP) and Orangutan Odysseys (OO) we are now pleased to be confirming details as regards plans for the "$212,000 in 2012" promotion.

We have confirmed all 2012 trips and trip dates (see later), along with providing you detailed information about how you can move forward with supporting this very exciting and new programme. We really hope that everyone gets behind this, as there are lots of additional benefits that can follow for all, but especially for the orangutans and their rainforests. Please use this Information sheet and the various attachments to help you start working on both your individual and team fundraising plans.

HOW THE 2012 FUNDRAISING TRIPS WORK

Fundraising tours to  Borneo and Sumatra in 2012 - Why?

AOP Reps and selected others will be given the opportunity to visit and see the orangutans first hand, visiting their habitat and see the destruction, along with special visits to the various rescue centres, who are supported by the AOP. We consider this first hand knowledge to be very important for all AOP supporters in order they can be both more knowledgeable and more aware about the reasons for the necessary funding and understand about for the places they are talking about to their volunteers and supporters. And of course, also that they have a great experience and amazing adventure at the same time.

As funds, and the need for them to be substantial, are now critical, it was important that we try and find ways to help raise large amounts in one go. These trips have the capacity to raise between $15,000  to $20,000 each. We believe that If we can get 10 trips (combination of AOP & OO) done during the year plus other contributions from all OO trips then our target is achievable. So, we are hoping you can all get behind “$212,000 in 2012”.

You will be also be performing a second major contribution, which OO passionately believe in, and that is raising awareness amongst the public. By traveling and experiencing the orangutans personally, each person that goes will come back emotionally impacted by what they have seen. They will then be telling more friends, family and associates about the incredible places they have been, the amazing sightings of the orangutans, and also the problems that exist that are affecting their survival. And so, then more people will then want to come and help and visit these locations, and in so helping protect the orangutans and their rainforests, along with helping strengthen the local tourism industry. Returning to OO's tag line -  "Saving the Environment through Tourism"

AOP President - Leif Cocks letter of support

Leif writes as follows..........

I am very pleased for the Australian Orangutan Project (AOP) is partnering with Orangutan Odysseys on this important program.  AOP is fighting a desperate battle to save orangutans from extinction.

This means we have to raise awareness, but more importantly raise money for the critical conservation work that is needed to stop the tide of destruction. And we need to do this in an ethical way.

By combining fundraising with responsible eco tourism we get many benefits, including:

  • funds for orangutan conservation,
  • alternative incomes for local communities,
  • increased public awareness, and sometimes thanks from the orangutans themselves they give us
  • lifelong advocates for the welfare and survival of orangutans.

I hope you can all come on board this great program.

Where will we go?

Each fundraising trip will travel to one of three locations in 2012 .

  1. Tanjung Puting National Part & Pangkalan Bun Rescue Centre – Borneo, Indonesia
  2. Gunung Leuser National Park & Batu Mbelin Rescue Centre – Sumatra, Indonesia
  3. Palangkaraya, Sabangau Forest & Nyaru Menteng Rescue Centre  – Borneo, Indonesia

What's a Fundraising Group ?

  • Each group consists of a team of between 8 to 12 (max) people (min age limit 12 years) and will tour one of the 3 listed destinations.
  • We provide a number of optional trip dates to each location (later in this document) with some of the trips being specifically labelled for groups wishing to organize their own team..
  • Each trip has a specially prepared itinerary, designed to provide unique and special experiences for those participating in these trips and not afforded to the average tourist. We want to reward those helping that are helping with something special.
  • Each team member traveling agrees to undertake their own fundraising to support the teams efforts and try to help reach both the individual and team targets. Details about these targets next.
  • Each team and team member should endeavor to allow themselves  sufficient time to raise funds to meet their target.

How does the money get raised, both by the groups and individuals ?

  • Each person traveling has $130 of their fare automatically included a direct donation to the AOP  = 1 adoption at $55 + 100 hectares of Safeguard at $75. Each person will get to choose which orphan they would like to adopt.
  • So, if we have 10 team members that's already a group total of $1,300.
  • Each person undertakes to raise a minimum target amount of $1,300 by way attaining sponsoring through various options as follows :
  • Adoptions of Orphaned Orangutans @ $55 each. If you can get 10 of these, then already you have reached $550!
  • Safeguard - sponsoring rainforest @ $7.50 per 10 hectares. If you could get 1,000 hectares of rainforest sponsored that's another $750!
  • Donations of any amount. Perhaps you might hold a cake stall or a fundraising dinner, or maybe someone just wants to give you a cash donation. Any size cash donation is fine and can be paid directly to the AOP.
  • Any combination of the above is ok, its just about trying to reach your own target of $1,300.
  • So, here if we have 10 team members that's another $13,000 to the group total !
  • We have found that the average amount raised by individuals over the last couple of years to be around the $1,500 mark. Some have done up to $5,000 on their own! So no limits need to be set ! Remember it's all going to the orangutans.
  • Each person’s trip cost includes an amount that is paid directly to the local rescue centres or orangutan facility that we visit, as an access / donation fee. This amount will vary from trip to trip but is at least $3,000 which is paid directly by OO to those rescue centres or facilities. This is at least another $3,000 for the team's total.
  • For every Fundraising group of 10 (minimum number required) OO will donate one “free” trip, valued at about $3,000 (or $4,000 for Palangkaraya), which can be used in a number of ways. This could be used for a raffle, auction, or similar to raise more funds for the groups total or may be used to reward and send one of the AOP's representatives. This decision shall be made in conjunction with the AOP's Committee.
  • So from the above list you will see that groups can be capable of helping contribute totals of around $17,500 + without to much trouble.

Note: all funds raised, except for item 4 are paid directly through the AOP website or their representatives. See following for how to make payments.

What is the process for making payments ?

  • All Adoptions, Safeguard and Donations should be made directly via the AOP's website at www.orangutan.org.au. You can use the following links that will provide direct access to the three options.
  • We shall provide a separate document which can be issued to all your sponsors which will outline the easiest way for them (or the group leader) to process payments  to the AOP.
  • The AOP Shop and Check Out contains a drop down box in the cart check out which asks "How did you hear about us". When this is selected a drop down list will be shown. Among other names you will see Orangutan Odysseys. All sponsors are asked to select this option. This will allow tracking of all OO fundraising trips.
  • In addition OO we will provide each team member with a spreadsheet and ask that try and keep their own record for the various funds that are raised via their sponsors.

When are the trips leaving and what states go where?

  • Fundraising trips start in April 2012 and continue as long as we can get groups to go in 2012.  We have also scheduled some trips for 2013. There are no time limits set and we can tailor dates to suit individual groups if required. Dares are listed below each location following.
  • Each group and team members generally needs approx 2 to 3 months minimum to work on reaching their fundraising targets.
  • Trip locations can be allocated or each group can request thier  preferred location. However, we cannot take every group to the one (same) location. There needs to a spread of trips to each location to help minimize our impact, especially at the Rescue Centres.
  • So, if you can't see a trip to a place you want to visit at a time you want to visit then talk to us about adding a new one.
  • Please note that the fundraising trips can only proceed once the minimum number of team members is reached and fundraising targets are nearing completion.

What other help will you get?

  • OO will prepare a dossier based for each fundraising trip including itineraries and local information.
  • These dossiers and trip available from both AOP & OO websites. Booking only through the OO website.
  • Arrange for (AOP/OO) to visit all states prior to them leaving for the trips and help with information nights and fundraising.
  • Fund raising for these groups can continue after their return and we can nominate an end date for this, say for about 2 months after they return. This allows them to continue raising funds especially in that immediate period after while they are still very excited about the trip.
  • OO issue 100% of any donations collected. No fees or costs applicable.

Our first destination is the jungle of Borneo to see the orangutan in its natural environment. We may happen across Tom the dominant male or the world famous intelligent Princess down on the pier. We will see both reintroduced and wild orangutans as well as a host of other awesome rain forest creatures. The Tanjung Puting National Park is home to rare and interesting species including the Proboscis monkey and the false gavial, a strange looking crocodile. But it is the orangutan that most people come here to visit. It's sheer beauty and passive demeanor endears one of our closest relatives to our hearts. We will see both wild and rehabilitated orangutans and have the opportunity to get close to these magnificent creatures.

After visiting the orangutan's natural environment, we will head back to civilization and visit the rescue centre near Pangkalan Bun. This, for many, is a highlight as you may come into close proximity with many young orangutans and garner a deeper understanding of their plight. If this visit doesn't move you nothing will! While we will have the opportunity to see these amazing creatures we will also be helping their plight. Through this expedition we will be providing much needed funds to the orangutan rescue centres, each participant will be adopting an Orangutan and we will be protecting land that ensures the habitat of the orangutan remains intact. Further, a direct donation to the rescue centre in Pangkalan Bun will be presented to them from funds raised by this trip.
